Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend at Awake the Lakes

Posted by alexandriaminnesota - May 24, 2012 - Blog

Looking for a great place to spend your Memorial Day weekend? Look no further. The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce presents Awake the Lakes, Thursday, May 24 through Monday, May 28. This weekend includes days filled with good food, music, and entertainment and is sure to be fun for the whole family.

Awake the Lakes starts on Thursday evening with “Music on the Courthouse Lawn” at 7 p.m., presented by the Red Willow Arts Coalition. Festivities continue early Friday morning with the “Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast” at the Broadway Ballroom.

If you can’t make it to Alexandria earlier in the weekend, don’t fret. Saturday is jam-packed with activities for the whole family. Most events on Saturday take place on 2nd Avenue by Big Ole Central Park so it is easy to take in many events. The day begins with a vintage car show, farmers market, free yoga class, and breakfast with Big Ole.
Kids may not go wild for the free yoga class, but there are plenty of kid-focused activities at the park including an extreme bicycle stunt show, petting zoo, pony rides, and“Blues for Kids” training for children ages 8-16. Adults, Saturday also hosts Rib Fest 2012, a motorcycle ride, beer garden, live music, fireworks, and racing at the Viking Speedway.

The weekend winds down with a 5/10k Fun Run will be held at Carlos Creek Winery on Sunday morning and a pancake feed on Monday morning. While exploring Alexandria, don’t forget to take advantage of the 500 lakes in the area for boating, swimming, water sports, and of course fishing. Families will certainly not run out of things to do at Awake the Lakes. If you haven’t made any plans for Memorial Day weekend, think Alexandria.
